| Nice Bible Feb 25, 2007 |
Bought this bible as a gift for my husband and carries it with him when we go to church. Sturdy and very nicely made. | | | Good product, good helps. Feb 22, 2007 |
Way back years and years ago, when I became committed to Bible study, the Thompson Chain reference Bible (NIV) was the first study Bible I bought. I loved it back then, It was a hard cover and it lasted 2-3 years till it was destroyed from much use- I used a Ryrie along side for the dispensational, evangelical notes. Over the Years I have bought other study Bibles including the Ryrie, Expositors, and the Dake. The Thompson is great for following key words though the Bible, it has great helps in the back such as a great archeological supplement, a concordance-dictionary, maps charts and more but as for study it would be better to have the notes on the same page of the text. One reviewer said you can see the type though the pages and he was right, the paper quality is not great. Overall the TCR is good, but not great, I prefer the DAKE Annotated Reference Bible. the DAKE Annotated Reference Bible has notes on the same page as the text, both on the side and bottom of text, it has the key words in Hebrew and Greek, which the TCR does not, has a good system to follow words though the text like the TCR and is easier to use for study. Take my advice and get the Dake its like having the TCR and the Ryrie together and more. Its hear at this site too get the large print one. | | | Good study bible Jan 21, 2007 |
I have had my Thompson for several years now. I evidently got it when quality of the binding and pages were still good, based on what I see below in the reviews by others.
I like my Thompson but prefer a Ryrie, MacArthur, or NIV Study Bible basically because my personal preference is to have all the information on one page. The Thompson has topics corresponding to each verse listed along the side margins along with a number. If you look that number up in the BACK of the book, you will find other related verses completely written out and grouped under that topic name. This makes it so you have to constantly flap back and forth to look up the topics and related references. I prefer to just have the reference and look it up. Having each reference verse written out also creates more bulk and a heavier bible.
However, the Thompson is also jam packed with nice informative maps, character studies, archeological information, etc. also all in the back of the bible. I would rather have them interspersed in the books they are related to, again a personal preference of mine.
All in all, if you don't mind constant flipping of pages and added bulk, and like the topical breakdown, this might be the bible for you. If you prefer all of your information on the same page as the text itself, this bible might be a bit of a disappointment.
It is not a bad study bible, just not my type, which is why I gave it the three stars inspite of all the good information. | | | Excellent study bible Jan 18, 2007 |
