Reviews - What do our customers think?
| Very good, but not updated May 21, 2008 |
This is really a good resource. It is unfortunate that the pictures are not in color as in past editions, but again this is a *value* edition, so cutbacks had to be expected to make it so affordable. The information, while good, is not up to date. I own the 1981 edition, and the 1995 edition. The 1995 edition is still in color, with some editing of pictures & some additional pictures. The big difference, though, between that edition and this value edition is that the 1995 edition has updated information, correction of some mistakes, and deletions that are no longer valid that occurred in the 1981 edition. This black & white *value* edition is the mirror image of the 1981 edition. No edits have taken place. You would think they would have given you atleast the updates from 1995, but that is not the case. For all intents and purposes you are buying the 1981 version, and in black & white to boot. Atleast the 1981 version had color photos. This one does not, yet it is identical in the information presented. If you want up to date information you would do better to get the 1995 version. This is not a bad version necessarily, overall the information is good, but there are some updates that were necessary (such as archaeological findings, names of rivers, countries, etc...) which are not present in this edition. | | | an excellent companion for Bible study Mar 13, 2004 |
As stated in the foreword, this Bible dictionary has been "designed, written, and edited with the needs of general readers in mind" and not for scholars with "formal training in biblical history or languages". I find it a valuable source book to get clarity on the historical aspects of the Bible, especially the Old Testament; as an example, following the chronological order of the rulers once the kingdoms were divided can be very confusing, and this book has a marvelous chart (much better than some presented by other dictionaries of this type and price range) with a side-by-side comparison. Another good chart is "The Parables of Jesus", telling where they appear, and in how many of the Gospels. Heavily illustrated with black and white photos, with small but clear and easy to read print, this is not a "quality production"; the paper is thicker, but similar to what is used for phone books, but for the price, it is a tremendous value; it is fascinating just to peruse, with no particular aim in mind, through subjects like "Plants of the Bible", and "Occupations and Trades". It has nine excellent maps at the back of the book, charted with an index and "Area" letters and numbers, which simplifies finding places, example: Masada, Map 6, Area B5. It also has a "Teaching Outline on Books of the Bible", which is useful if you are reading a Bible that does not include one at the beginning of each book I find I refer to this dictionary daily; once purchased, it is one of those "how did I get along without this ?" type of book. I give it the highest rating despite the paper quality, for the amount of information included at a reasonable cost. | | Write your own review about Illustrated Dictionary of the Bible (Super Value Series)
