| The Psalms Come Alive in 'The Gift of Psalms,' Apr 1, 2010 |
The Psalms let you see and feel the deep and passionate relationship that we can have with God. The majesty of God and the weakness of man are there for all to see. Also you find the hope and joy that comes from allowing God to rule and to be an intimate part of your life. The Gift of Psalms pierces the veil of our day to day routine with the majesty and passion of the Psalms. The music and dramatic readings along with the devotional based on each Psalm will encourage, convict and build you up as a variety of individuals read the Psalms which are included. The Word of Promise `The Gift Of Psalms' Devotional Wisdom from fifty of the Best Loved Psalms. `The Gift of Psalms' package also includes a book of fifty Psalms adapted from the New King James version of the Bible. It contains devotional passages written by Lori Jones for each psalm. In the storage area in the back of the book are three compact discs which have thirty of the psalms and the corresponding devotionals on them. This is a wonderful gift idea and will bring hours of encouragement and joy as you read or listen to each psalm and the devotional that goes with it. Its layout and design are of good quality, and the hardback book has heavy weight quality pages. It is set up so that each two page spread has the Psalm on one side and the devotional and a prayer on the facing page. The three compact discs contain thirty of the psalms and devotionals read by people such as: Jason Alexander, Harry Hamlin, Michael York, Gary Sinise, Malcolm McDowell, Richard Dreyfus and others. The different voices make listening experience more enjoyable, and the background music contributes to the quality of the experience.
In conclusion this is a well put packaged and produced product. The excellent quality in both the book and the discs are well worth the money. I highly recommend 'The Gift of Psalms' for your personal enjoyment and encouragement. This also makes a memorable gift idea for a variety of occasions!
| | | Better Than the Average Gift Book Nov 20, 2009 |
I've seen a lot of books that are essentially the re-packaging of small tidbits from other books, and offer very little in the way of content, sold as "gift books" at twice the price they are worth.
The Gift of the Psalms, however, goes beyond the norm in offering truly good and refreshing devotionals each day. It's a nice collection to have, and the audio CD is a plus. I popped it in while driving around town and it fed my spirit. I'd endorse this as a good gift book. | | | Good for a gift Aug 22, 2009 |
I also recieved this book to review from Thomas Nelson Publishers. [...] It is a beautifully made book- hard back and well crafted. The pages are glossy and are very attractive. The Psalms are read by many well-known actors and actresses. It includes readings from the Psalms, as well as the Psalms in print form. This book would best be used as a gift book. The readings are beautifully done and the book is easy to read, but I could not see myself reading this book over and over again. Another negative I have about the book is that it only includes a selection of the Psalms. Each Psalm is given a summary and also a devotional/ prayer to use.
I am sure there are others who could appreciate this book much more than I can, so I am passing it on to another person, in hopes that they will enjoy it more. | | | delightful Jul 31, 2009 |
Thomas Nelson, published this delightful devotional. The Gift of Psalms, is a book printed on special paper and with a deluxe smooth leather-ish cover. Included are three audio CDs with a reading from The Word of Promise Audio Bible coupled with a reading of the devotional thought from the book for that particular psalm.
The Word of Promise readings are from the New King James Version, which has a majestic quality about it when read aloud. The readings are done by various actors such as Sean Astin, Richard Dreyfuss, Joan Allen, and a variety of other names. The quality of the recordings are excellent, with some background majestic sounding classical music.
In the book, one page includes an excerpt from the psalm for that day, and the opposite page contains Lori Jones' devotional. The devotionals focus on the theme found in the psalm for that day, but don't hesitate to reference other Scriptures. At the end of each devotional is a short prayer in response to the reading.
The CDs include the entire Psalm, not just an excerpt, and fit nicely into the back cover of the book, in special slots. The book covers 50 Psalms, while the CDs cover 30. Even so, the book would make a great companion to a personal reading through the Psalms.
The only thing the book really lacks is a nice bookmark similar to what one would find in a Bible. It seems like it cries out for something like that, with each page being so glossy and thick, and with the fine finish.
This book is an excellent gift book, and I enjoyed reading it. My thanks go out to Thomas Nelson, for providing me with a copy of this book. I'm planning on making my copy a gift, soon. | | | Devotional Gift Book Jul 30, 2009 |
Devotions. Scripture. Psalms and CDs. Voice talent like: Gary Sinise, Malcolm MacDowell, Richard Dreyfuss, Joan Allen, Jason Alexander, Harry Hamlin and Jesse McCartney read the full Psalm (30 of 50 of the Psalms included). Then, the narrator reads a devotional. The presentation is, for the most part, peaceful. The book contains portions of the highlighted Psalms as well as the entire devotional there on the page. The physical package is nice with a padded book (think journal) and glossy pages. Very classy, gift-book presentation. Three CDs are tucked into the back cover.
I found the devotionals timely often and enjoyed the comforting nature of the vocal presentation, especially the narration. Some of my personal favorites were included: Psalm 18, 90, 103 and 149. This book/CD combo would make a nice gift.
Some cons: overdone vocal presentation (at times) and poorly edited copy. If you can overlook that, you've got yourself a fine devotional help. | | Write your own review about Audio CD-NKJV Word Of Promise: Gift Of Psalms
