Item Description...
Most Bible commentaries take us on a one-way trip from the twentieth century to the first century. But they leave us there, assuming that we can somehow make the return journey on our own. In other words, they focus on the original meaning of the passage but don't discuss its contemporary application. The information they offer is valuable -- but the job is only half done! The NIV Application Commentary Series helps us with both halves of the interpretive task. This new and unique series shows readers how to bring an ancient message into modern context. It explains not only what the Bible means but also how it can speak powerfully today.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
| Very Disappointing Nov 26, 2006 |
I love the NIV Application Commentary series. I was originally introduced to this series by a professor at the seminary I attend. I love the plain writing, the application and the commitment to orthodox/conservative theology that marks the series. For this reason, I cannot recommend the volume on 1 Peter in this series.
I bought this volume so that I might have a good reference for teaching and writing on 1 Peter. However, there are times within this volume when Dr. McKnight does not give a clear exegesis of the Scripture, but instead relies on other sources to tell the reader what he is to think of the Scripture. For example, in the section on 1 Peter 3:1-7, he references "Boundaries" by Cloud and Townsend and "If He Only Knew" by Smalley to form his hermeneutic of the passsage. The problem is that the teachings that he sites from these books are totally opposed to the teachings of the Bible (p. 189-196).
The bottom line is that, in places, Dr. McKnight ignores Biblical teaching and gives us the opinions of pop-Christian culture. I am not looking for a resource to help me teach my students the opinions of popular authors; I am looking for a resource to help me teach them the Word of God. Unfortunately, this volume is not adequate to the task. Very disappointing.
