| Great Job on the Chronology and Notes! Mar 3, 2009 |
A few months back I received a copy of the NKJV Chronological Study Bible from Thomas Nelson. The NKJV is not a translation that I normally use but I am a big fan of chronological Bibles since we are often not very Biblically literate & often have a tendency to flatten the scriptures to all one time period.
This translation from the very beginning lets you know that there has been some thought put into not only the chronological order but in visually communicating this in a number of ways. The outer cover and table of contents give the reader a picture of the Biblical story broken down into epochs. Most of the epochs are labels that you will recognize but in the table of contents these are broken down further with dates and major movements of characters and groups in the Bible. The opening pages also include time charts and time and time panels. All of these tools at a basic level help you see and hopefully grasp the scope of the Biblical story.
Each epoch has an a great introductory section which includes historical background information along with theological insights. Visually the notes that are placed in the Bible are not all at the bottom of the page like many study Bibles but in this one the notes are set off colorfully (but not to much) and include notes, charts and maps right on the pages where you need them when you are reading. At the top of each page you are given dates as well as scripture references. I feel like the designers have done a great job of helping to remind the reader where the stories are set in time. Time capsules are placed throughout the Bible and they give you a nice chart with dates of rulers, movements and events that surround the stories that you are reading.
The notes that are included in the scriptures themselves like the introductory notes are very helpful. I love that they include archaeology, history, theology and science in the descriptions of the passages and of what is going on in the surrounding world. I also love that the Bible gives an epoch to the intertestamental period (the time between the testaments). This is a part of our story that most believers don't know much about but is critical in understanding the context of the new testament writers and even to things that Jesus confronts in his ministry. The Bible also includes a listing of cultural and historic topics for study that point the reader to Biblical stories that address them. This is followed by an awesome glossary of historical terms and people. The concordance looks to be normal for a Bible of this type.
Once again, I don't usually use the NKJV but I really like this Bible and it has been fun to have on the shelf. If you are interested in history or science in the Bible this is a handy version to have around. If you are a person who loves to read the Bible and see God's grand story that has run for centuries, this Bible is for you. If you are looking for a chronological version, I would grab this one. I have two other chronological Bibles and this one is of far higher quality than those. | | | An Exciting Addition for Bible Lovers Mar 2, 2009 |
The Chronological Study Bible: New King James Version
I have been reading the Bible for many years but this is the first time I have come across a chronological arrangement of the Bible. A lot of background work and research seems to have gone into the preparation of this Bible which is what makes it a wonderful tool for the study of the Bible afresh, particularly in connection with the historical setting of individual Books and their interconnected aspects. For instance I had always thought that the Book of Mallachi was the last book of the Old Testament, as it appears just before the commencement of the Book of Matthew. I was delighted to discover through this Study that that was not the case. The Study Bible throws fresh light on some aspects of the Bible that we have often taken for granted. It thus becomes a pleasure to study and read the Bible once again using this Study Bible. There are also some welcome aids to study, such as a Concordance and topics of cultural and historical interest. The print and illustrations are excellent. Altogether a useful treasure for all those who love to read the Bible and discover its secrets. | | | Chronological Study Bible Review Mar 2, 2009 |
I am enjoying reading this study Bible. It is full of very interesting, thoughtful and enlightening information regarding the historical context of the Bible. Well organized with many supplemental informational sections corresponding to the particlar Bible entries. I am well satisifed with the purchase. | | | Terrific Bible! Feb 26, 2009 |
I've been a student of the Bible for decades, but reading it for the first time in chronological order of the events gives a fresh perspective to God's word. I also love all the extra data that relates the text to the historical times and customs of the ancient cultures. Great product! | | | Excellent resource Feb 26, 2009 |
