| User friendly, family friendly, faith sharing friendly Jun 10, 2010 |
I find this Bible very easy to read. Its pages are uncluttered and the type is clear. I like the ideas contained that make it easy to share faith around the Bible, a book that traditionally has intimidated many Catholics. Sharing the Bible as a family will help to bring more Catholic families together to learn about the Bible and share their Catholic faith. The Bible is written for adults and teens to read with the family and for the younger members of the family to listen. The activities and questions are there so that all can take part in the sharing and learning at home. I highly recommend this Bible. | | | The Catholic Faith and Family Bible May 10, 2010 |
I purchased it for a friend. She was delighted that I could find it through you. A friend of hers had one and she did not know how to find one. Thank you for your quick response. | | | Great Bible May 6, 2010 |
I was also given this bible as a gift. I find it very user friendly and uncluttered. I guess I spend more time praying with scripture than evaluating grahics and the quality of paper. I use the bible to pray with every morning and I find that God still speaks to me profoundly as any other bible. I highly recommend it, especially for the intentionality of its focus on the family. | | | Does the work for you...start reflecting faster. May 6, 2010 |
I received this Bible as a gift in January and I just love it. I am not a scholar and have not spent too much time studying the Bible (so sorry, but I couldn't even understand that last reviewer's technical language). I just know that I found this Bible enjoyable and refreshing. I didn't have to spend a lot of time trying to understand what I read before I could reflect or pray. This Bible's quotes, explanations and layout helped me understand difficult passages and make sense out of otherwise outdated/historical language. For example, a section in Proverbs gives a nice description of what it meant to "Fear the Lord." It is not really fear, but awe we should have. Also, the light green inserts made it all easy on the eyes.
So, I recommend this Bible for average, faithful people who are looking for a full Bible experience, but do not have a lot of time for complexity. | | | Not Much Faith In This Bible Apr 14, 2010 |
While I very much appreciate the NRSV translation for many reasons, if you looking for an NRSV or a specifically Roman Catholic family Bible, you may want to pass on this one.
1) The Hardcover binding is great, but the paper is very thin and of poorer quality.
2) The meager illustrations remind me of a 21st Century version of the figures in the Good News Bible (which are actually more fun, IMHO) They are also mostly green and black in color, similar to the cover color. Used alert he reader to different genres of Biblical literature, they are plain ugly.
3) The notes for study lack substance and are not conducive to building faith. Here are two examples of their paucity: a. In the in-text notes discussing Hebrew Acrostic Poems in Psalms, the notes ask you to make up silly sing-song ones of your own using the Roman alphabet. b. The notes for the book of Jonah call him a mythical figure and not an actual person with no supporting evidence for this claim. Why does this Bible determine that stance for the reader? Not very conducive to making one believe anything else in the Bible. (If you don't - fine - just don't shove that view down the readers throat and call it a family and faith Bible!)
4) The general layout of the text is not anything spectacular.
This is the only product I have returned to this site in my 6 years of much buying from them. The marketing audience for this Bible is not accurate.
If you want an NRSV, I recommend another HarperCollins product: The HarperCollins NRSV Study Bible, which is certainly more neutral in tone, nicely printed and has voluminous in-depth textual notes, Bible book overviews, etc.
I refrained from giving this a One Star rating only because it was an NRSV translation. | | Write your own review about NRSV - The Catholic Faith and Family Bible
