| Great One Volume Illustrated Bible Commentary Nov 19, 2009 |
I am enjoying this Zondervan One Volume illustrated Bible Commentary, very much. It is full of pictures and loaded with useful historical information. My only complain, for lack of a better word, is that the text is written in a very technical way, and difficult to read at times for those people, like me, that did not have a chance to pursue higher education. It is also loaded with a lot of external information. Perhaps a little too much for the average Bible student. Other than that, it is a great guide through the books of the Bible. Enjoy it. | | | Excellent Resource Sep 25, 2009 |
I am currently in a Disciple Bible Study and needed a commentary to help decipher what I'm learning. This Commentary resource is EXCELLENT. Not only does it interpret verses, it gives historical and geographical information. It is rather heavy to carry, but is worth its' weight in gold. | | | Praise the Lord Jul 4, 2009 |
This is an excellent resource for Bible study. It is recommended by M. Div. professors and me, an ordinary Joe. The book quality was excellent from the source. | | | Good overall but commentary needs revision Aug 8, 2008 |
This commentary is an updated version of the New International Bible Commentary (1979) which was edited by F.F. Bruce. Note: this commentary is not the Zondervan NIV Bible Commentary (which comes in 2 volumes and is an abridged version of the 12 volume Expositor's Bible Commentary).
The NIBC was a good 1 volume Bible commentary when it came out in 1979. Its notes were very concise and the explanations were helpful in bringing out the basic meaning of the text. This updated version is "updated", not in its commentary, but in using the TNIV as the Bible translation, having colored illustrations/photographs, Bible charts, and quotations from classical works such as Suetonius or Tacitus, or the early church fathers. The basic Bible commentary remains the same as that of 1979. The authors of the commentary text often quoted from sources which dated 1979 or earlier. Much extensive biblical research has been done since 1979, and thus the commentary is somewhat dated. I felt that to be truly updated, this Bible commentary should be completely revised to include the latest scholarly and archaeological research. That's why I deleted one star.
However, it is much more reader-friendly, with its charts, colored photographs, and newly formatted layout. So, if you liked the 1979 NIBC, you'll find this much more attractive to read.
If you want a very up-to-date 1 volume Bible commentary, you may want to check out the New Bible Commentary (21st edition). If you can afford to pay more, buy the 2 volume Zondervan NIV Bible Commentary set (which again is the abridged version of the Expositor's Bible Commentary). | | Write your own review about Zondervan Bible Commentary 1V Illustrated
