Excellent book. A must have  Dec 8, 2006
This is an excellent book. However I agree with a previous comment that it's better to have also Strong's concordance. I do not agree with "Athens" comment giving an evaluation of only two stars. Vine's expository dictionary is giving excellent definitions and explanations, at least for the NT Greek words, and I know what I am talking about as I studied ancien Greek for 6 years...in GREECE!! Therefore, there is only one possible recommendation: BUY IT ...together with Strong's concordance.

Not bad, could be better!  Nov 26, 2006
Vine's Complete Expository Dictionary covers both the Old and New Testaments although it focuses more on the New Testament than the Old. 299 pages are allocated to the Old Testament and 698 pages are allocated to the New Testament. It is disappointing more focus is on the New Testament I would've liked to see a balanced book. I also like how this book treats each definition from a Old/New testament perspective. In the Hebrew section on fool it will actually give you the Greek equivalent and if you have Strong's Complete Concordance you can compare the definitions.

This book lists all the words used in the King James Bible along with their Hebrew/Greek equivalents, Strong's numbers, and the type of word. The words are indexed based on the English word from the King James Bible along with its original Hebrew/Greek meaning. I like how detailed the definitions are compared to something like Strong's Complete Concordance this is very useful in extending your understanding on the original words. I bought this book along with Strong's Exhaustive Concordance which is quite vague and brief in the dictionary sections and this book supplements it quite well. You can use Strong's Concordance on its own and this book makes a quite useful supplement but I have found that Vine's Dictionary is somewhat less effective on its own and really should be used as a supplement to something like Strong's Concordance.

I like how this title informs you if the King James Version mistranslates a word and often compares the King James translation to the Revised Standard Version. What I find disappointing about this book is it does not allow you to avoid using the King James Bible because all the words are based on the KJV although you could get by with the Revised Standard Version you will still need the KJV from time to time. If you don't have a KJV bible you will find this book somewhat useful but will often have to refer to KJV to find out which word to lookup. The King James Bible and Revised Standard Version are old and unfortunately this book is heading in the same direction so a more recent title may be a better choice.

Old standard, now surpassed  Jul 1, 2006
I hate to give this dictionary only 2 stars because it has been the most helpful word study tool for those who do not know the original Biblical languages. But it has now been surpassed by

Mounce's Complete Expository Dictionary of Old and New Testament Words (William Mounce).

It is more accurate and thorough than Vine's.

Stephen D. Renn's Expository Dictionary of Bible Words and Lawrence Richards' New International Encyclopedia of Bible Words can also be helpful. But they are less thorough than Vine's, let alone Mounce's.

Other helpful tools for word study include:

Interlinear for the Rest of Us (William Mounce), which includes a Greek-English dictionary.

Word Study Greek-English New Testament (Paul McReynolds), which has a very useful concordance based on Greek words.

Simply the best Expository Dictionary that I know !!!  Nov 22, 2000
Flavio F. Lima - ( [email protected] ) - The only thing that I don't liked was the little words of the Old Testament in it. However, this famous Dictionary is my guide when I need to understand the true meaning of the greek words. Yes every Bible student must have it in your personal library. It is an excellent reference work !

The best bible study assistant ever!  Apr 4, 2000
A must book for any serious new or old testament student. This is great for someone getting started in studying the Bible or for a Pastor, Teacher, etc. It provides the fundamental definitions of key words to help you extract the interpretations to God's word.
