| Greek for the Rest of Us - a great beginning into the world of the Bible Nov 7, 2006 |
As everything Bill Mounce writes (I have bought them all), this is a fine, well put-together book to introduce the main language of the New Testament to new learners. It can serve as a first step in schools/seminaries for those without any previous language exposure, as a kind of up ramp rather than a staircase. Of itself, with a lexicon (Greek/English dictionary), it will let many beginning students, clergy without Greek studies and interested laymen to read and get a basic understanding of the language in which most of the New Testamant was written. They would also be better equiped to use various word study and Bible commentaries presented in English, but which use/show the Greek words behind the English. Bill has put in a special section that concentrates on this useful area. As with others of his books, he has included PC based resources to make learning easier. One of its other valuable aspects is the excellent review of basic grammar for those who have never seen an inflected language with its many case endings and verb tenses and moods, as Old English used to have, but which it has mostly lost. Few students have studied Latin these days (it was required in my high school and was of great use to me as a bridge to Spanish and a deeper understanding of Latin-derived English words). Older Greek texts assumed that students knew Latin and taught accordingly. Dr. Mounce does not assume this and so his book will be great way to ease into Greek, even giving the reader a better understanding of English.
In summary, this book fills the gap between a typical modern high school level of language study and the more difficult first year college/seminary beginning Greek course very well. It will allow a student who wanted more to breeze through the first months of a standard seminary Greek course, while the overview of the whole language it gives would make ongoing learning much easier. I highly recommend it as a required book for all Christian seminary students as well as for those who are trying to learn more about God's Word on their own. It will allow both a window into the language in which Christ's Words were first recorded and the start of a wonderful journey into the beautiful language of Greek. He even gives a chapter on an overview of Hebrew. I highly recommend it, as well as it logical follow-on, Basics of Biblical Greek, also by Dr. Mounce, with all of its workbooks and vocabulary guides (all on this site). Of the many Greek texts I have, this pair is the best for today's student. A last comment: this is a good place to start for the student of Classical Greek as well, and for the same reasons. By the way, Bill Mounce makes learning Greek (almost) fun.
Karl Schulte a life long Greek student. Our Savior's LC Jeff City, MO | | | Great "Cheat Sheet' Aug 31, 2006 |
This is a wonderful way to quickly recall important ponts about New Testament Greek without feeling like you are cheating. It is a great reference guide that is pre-punched and fits easily into a notebook for easy and quick reference. | | | Greek Reviewing Feb 17, 2006 |
This has proved to be an affordable, but extremely valuable study tool for Greek Grammar class. It has most everything important that's needed for quick reference. There are a few things that I would have liked to have seen on it also, but overall I was very pleased with this study tool. | | Write your own review about Biblical Greek Study Guide (Get An A!)
