Item Description... The Daily Reading Bible offers maximum flexibility and convenience for reading through the Bible in a year. Each date of the year, along with its respective reading, is listed chronologically in the margins. This guides the reader through a yearlong plan of reading the Old Testament once, the Psalms twice, and the New Testament twice. Because the actual text of the Bible is not rearranged, this edition can also be used for regular church, study, or personal devotional use. Included in the Bible is a removable reading calendar so that readings can be marked off as they are read. In this way, the Daily Reading Bible is an edition that can be used day after day and year after year.
9.5-point type Size: 5.5? x 8.5? Words of Christ in black Two columns (same as Classic Thinline editions) Free CD-ROM request card included Not thumb-indexed Hardcover edition has three ribbon markers
Additional Information Unlike some other Bibles designed for one-year reading, the text of the ESV Daily Reading Bible has not been rearranged. Reviews - What do our customers think?
| Good format - poor binding Jan 24, 2007 |
I like the format for daily reading. The size is just right. The binding is poor. I have used it for about a month and already the covers are starting to come apart. | | | Highly Recommended but could still be improved Oct 14, 2006 |
I have been using the ESV for daily devotions for nearly two years. The first copy I had (the Classic Reference Edition in bonded leather) fell apart. In part, that is because I used it heavily and in part because I inserted a ribbon holder in the spine to give me sufficient ribbons to mark my daily readings (one from the Old Testament, two from the New Testament, and morning and evening Psalms). I bought this new edition to replace the copy that had worn out.
First, the things I like:
The font is very legible and there is little bleeding through the pages, unlike some of the ESV thinline editions. There are three ribbons. I could use at least one more, but it is enough to avoid the need for a ribbon holder down the spine. Hopefully this will add to the longevity of this copy. I do not intend to use the reading schedule used in this edition, but for those who would, it is well marked for that.
Second, the things that could be improved:
I hope that Crossway will eventually (sooner than later) publish a leather edition of this edition and add at least one more ribbon. (My daily devotions include a chapter from the Old Testament, a Gospel selection, a selection for another New Testament book and morning and evening Psalms. Four ribbons would be ideal.) I also wish that Crossway would reconsider and add an edition with the Apocrypha. (The Reformers considered those books well worth reading even while rejecting their canonicity and included them in their translations.) Finally, a little more indepth concordance would be nice. I understand that Crossway was trying to keep this volume thin, but I would have preferred their dispensing with the book introductions at the end and using the saved space to bulk up the concordance.
While waiting for this edition and because I read from the Apocrypha on occasion, I purchased a copy of the new Revised Standard Version, Second Catholic Edition. The ESV and RSV-SCE are very similar. Where they differ, however, I prefer the latter as more consistent in the translation of the same term in the original language. (The ESV will translate the same word differently in different passages where the context does not seem to call for a different meaning.) In addition, when comparing editions priced similarly, I believe the quality of the leatherette RSV-SCE is significantly higher than the ESV in terms of the binding, paper, font selection, and print. Having said that, the ESV is by far my favorite modern translation except for the RSV-SCE. | | Write your own review about ESV Daily Reading Bible, Hardcover, Black Letter Text
